Capturing history

To reproduce these treasured violins, they initially needed to be recorded under rigorous conditions. By taking instruments built by Stradivari, Guarneri, Tononi, Catenari, Degani, and Gagliano, Signal Wizard was able to capture the personality of each instrument and turn it into an impulse response. Recorded in both anechoic chambers and non-reverberant, acoustically controlled environments, the characteristics of these priceless instruments was successfully captured in astonishing detail.

The trick to reproducing such a high-quality sound is to combine both the impulse response with the frequency response. Each impulse response is analysed and checked by the engineers at Signal Wizard for consistency, auto-calibrated for loudness, and finally programmed into the VSound unit. The onboard 24-bit core of VSound ensures that every nuance of the response is faithfully replicated in the final sound output.

Unlimited customisation

The magic starts when you download the VSound software. Here you can customise your tone to find your personal sound. When using an electro-acoustic instrument, the blender option can combine the original signal with the processed signal. This way you can retain some of the tone from your instrument while enhancing it with a processed signal. You can then use the spectrum editor for precise customisation of the sound for optimal performance. For even more enjoyment, you can even add your own impulse responses for more creative experimentation.

Built to last

Based on a traditional guitar pedal, the VSound boasts a rugged build quality. Inspired by a Stomp-box design, the VSound is easy to use, even in live environments. Around the front of the pedal, you will find an input jack, output jack, USB port, and a power port. This way you can simply plug the violin audio lead into VSound, plug the output from VSound into an amplifier or headphones, switch on, and select a violin sound. It's that simple.

On the top of the pedal you will find your controls and functions. These include a volume knob, a gain-selectable preamplifier, a response selector, and a bypass toggle. Out of the box, your VSound module comes installed with ten pre-set impulse responses. You can download even more sounds from Signal Wizard's website and install them on to your VSound via USB.

About Signal Wizard Systems Ltd

Signal Wizard is a spin-out company from the University of Manchester. Launched in 2001, they specialised in a wide range of applications such as noise suppression, adaptive filtering, system modelling, and musical instrument research. In 2004, they started to sell these products to research institutions, business, and private individuals all over the world. In 2015, Signal Wizard Systems Ltd launched the first VSound system and was distributed as a commercial device. By teaming up with the world-renowned Johannsson Violins (Reykjavik, Iceland), they were able to capture the characteristics of some of the world's most treasured and priceless instruments. Later, the Swedish acoustics company Elvari KB contacted Signal Wizard Systems, and have closely collaborated ever since.
