Jeff Hamilton doesn't have a crash cymbal at his setup, which means the Hammertone Ride was developed to work as both a ride and crash. Ideally both the 22'' and 20'' ride would be used alongside each other for a range of dynamic musicality.
The bowed shape of the Sabian Crescent 22'' Hammertone Ride cymbal raises the overtones to produce a balanced mid-range tone, with low and high pitched sounds. When riding, there are washy, dark and sizzling undertones. When crashing, you get a brighter and louder tone. The bell is intensively hammered to soften and mellow out the sound.
